Best places to party in South America

The World Cup is history and the party is over. Or is it? South America has some famously boisterous places to feed your fiesta spirit. Why not head to one of the many party places South America has to offer…

Buenos Aires – the home of tango (pictured) and one of the continent's most well-known party cities. Start with drinks in fashionable Recoleta and an unfeasibly late steak dinner, before heading to boliches (nightclubs) in BA's Palermo neighbourhood around 2am to party til dawn.

A high altitude and cheap drinks has established La Paz as a dizzying destination on the party-seekers' trail. The streets around Calle Murillo and the area of Sopocachi are popular, as well as Mongo's for salsa on a Tuesday, and Malegria for its Afro-Bolivian music (Saya Afro) on Thursdays.

Cusco is the centre of Peru's ancient Inca culture, but that doesn’t stop it being a good night out. Mama Africa in the centre is highly rated for a mix of music and clientele, while Ukuku's is good for a sweaty dance to all the crowd-pleasers you could hope for.

Colombia's capital has garnered a reputation for a diverse nightlife that covers everything from sticky-floored student hangouts along 'The Funnel', to the upmarket Zona Rosa establishment of La Villa Bar, which runs a successful weekly drinking-and-language-exchange combo. Alternatively, head to the Chapinero district’s thriving gay scene or Chía – 45 minutes north of the city – for Andrés Carne de Res’ massive, quirky parties

Don’t be fooled by São Paulo’s lack of aesthetic appeal, it’s unstoppably hedonistic. For samba rhythms, try O do Borogodó or one of the many traditional Brazilian gastropubs (botecos) of Vila Madalena in the west of town. For a more eclectic mix of food and bars, head to the 'Baixo Augusta' area.

Rio’s reputation as a party haven is indisputable, but to get the full experience, begin the evening with cocktails and traditional food at the Academia de Cachaça. From here, head to indie club Casa da Matriz, the chichi 00 (Zero Zero), or the Lapa District for some samba fun. Mellow Yellow – near Copacabana beach – is the city's best-known party hostel

Morro de São Paulo is one of Brazil’s best-loved all-night party towns. Grab a couple of caipifruta cocktails and head to a theme night at Pulsar Disco, or Bar Funny for Brazilian, international and techno beats. When you’re done, hit the open-air Toca do Morcego for more dancing or to watch the sunrise from its chill-out area by the ocean.

Ramshackle Valparaíso is not your classic party city, but its arty edge makes it worth the effort. Club Máscara’s live DJs and alternative soundtrack attracts a savvy crowd, while La Piedra Feliz does just about everything from jazz to rock, to food and films, and has a late-night nightclub in the basement. Ele Bar is all about live music in a relaxed atmosphere – sit back with a drink and some food, and enjoy
